Pain Relief for Upper Back Pain

When most people think of back pain they think of the lower back and hardly ever think of back pain in the upper part of the back. However those who suffer from upper back pain know all too well that the upper part of the back can hurt just as bad as the lower portion of the back. Because this upper back pain can tell you they can be just as painful and debilitating as pain in the lower back.

The majority of the time upper back pain is caused predominantly by myofascial pain or it could be caused by muscle irritation and a dysfunction on the part of the joint. On certain rare occasions upper back pain may be caused by the degeneration on the discs in the upper back. Far fewer cases of upper back pain occurring from this condition are reported then are the myofascial pain.

Although individuals may not suffer with upper back pain as often as lower back pain it can induce very severe pain and cause extreme discomfort. There are several treatments which can aid in pain reduction on both joint dysfunction and myofascial pain. Daily exercise is one of the preventative measures as well as treatments for both types of pain. The exercise when combined with both active and passive physical therapy is a very effective treatment for both joint dysfunction and myofascial pain.

Some about individuals have found relief from upper back pain by chiropractic manipulation. This manipulation along with massage therapy or deep tissue massage has been proven in some cases to alleviate pain in the upper and lower back.

Others have been successfully treated by use of acupuncture treatments. These treatments target certain areas of the back and neck area which are reputed to be nerve areas connected to the back that when stimulated will start the healing process and alleviate pain.

Sometimes it is necessary to receive injection's which are accompanied by a local anesthetic on certain trigger points on the back. This gives relief from the chronic upper back pain. These injections when combined with either over-the-counter medications or prescribed drugs can give patients long-lasting relief from their upper back pain.

There are some instances when upper back pain can be treated with prescription drugs alone successfully. These instances would be when the upper back pain is caused by poor posture or extreme trauma. In recent years one of the most reported cases of upper back pain came from individuals who work daily sitting in front of their computers. These computer users reported pain in the upper back, neck and shoulders.

Another condition which is responsible for some cases upper back pain is the fracture or injury of the thoracic vertebrae. When this occurs, there must be medical attention given to the individual as soon as possible. This type of injury cannot be neglected as it can lead to further damage to the spine and spinal column which could result in paralysis in the affected individual.
